Who created Paleo Diet and how did it work?

cooking hacks and tips

You may be asking yourself, "Who developed the Paleo diet?" American scientist Dr. Loren Cordain has the answer. He is a specialist in exercise physiology, nutrition, and other related topics. He is a prominent advocate for the Paleo diet. Which one of these men should we believe? Or is this just another legend? Continue reading to learn more about this amazing diet!

Dr. Loren Cordain

The Paleo diet is a controversial lifestyle plan that advocates eating foods our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate millions of years ago. Based on research into Stone Age diet which was low in sodium and high in potassium, the diet has been developed. High salt intake is linked to many modern diseases. Dr. Cordain believes that living like our caveman ancestors can help prevent many diseases.

Cordain has been a prominent figure in the fields of nutrition and evolution. His research has been featured on several major media outlets, including Dateline NBC and the front page of The New York Times. He has written three books on the subject as well as a newsletter. You can find more information about Paleo here.

There are three levels to the Paleo Diet: intermediate, advanced, and basic. The lowest level allows you more "open" meals, and allows you to eat foods that are strictly forbidden. It is possible to eat legumes or other seeds, but you must be careful. At the top level, you can consume up to 20 meals a week and 20 snacks. If you want your life to be long and prosperous, the diet should be followed for a lifetime.

This diet is based upon the assumption that high protein intakes are reflected in hunter-gatherers. Cordain does however cite research that supports his theory using an ethnographic atlas from 229 hunter–gatherer societies. Cordain's research found that 73% of them got more energy than 50% from animal food, and only 14% from plants. Cordain's findings are refuted in Am. J. Clin. Nutr. 71:665-667.

Although this hypothesis seems to be sound, Dr. Cordain has strong counterarguments. Cordain claims that eating low amounts of fat and carbs can increase cancer risk. But the evidence doesn't support his claim. The diet's benefits outweigh its drawbacks, for example. Cordain's analysis also points out the limitations of the diet, although it is still in its infancy.

Walter Voegtlin

Paleolithic is a way for eating that has been around since at least 35years. Walter Voegtlin is the gastroenterologist that developed The Stone Age Diet. This diet was developed following extensive research into man's eating habits and ecology. His study found that the diet was beneficial for people with common digestive problems. This diet has many health benefits including improved brain function, and a lower risk of colon cancer.

Voegtlin's diet was based on the idea that humans evolved as carnivores. We should also do the same. He believed that humans were genetically very similar to dogs or sheep and should eat a primarily carnivorous diet. Advocates of the diet point to current data which is mixed, but generally favorable. However, they should remember that modern humans have not adapted to the paleo diet as much as animals did ten thousand years ago.

Walter Voegtlin used the chemistry of foods to show the effectiveness of his diet in "The Real Diet of Man". The book highlights foods with low glycemic and high fiber levels, as well as balanced essential fatty acid. It is focused on foods that help the body function optimally. The authors, Ted Slanker and Walter Voegtlin, have been reporting on the fundamentals of nutrition research for over fifteen years. They also distill complex studies into basic nutrients for human well-being.

Paleo is not suitable for all food groups. This includes processed foods, sugars, salt, and grains. Certain animals cannot be adapted to the Paleo diet because they are grain-fed. Furthermore, modern fruits and veggies are different than those consumed during paleolithic time. Many Paleo dieters cite studies with a limited number of subjects that are not long-term. These studies do NOT support the Paleo way of eating.

The Paleolithic diet relies on animal protein so it is important to study the diets of animals. Modern humans are influenced by Paleolithic vegetarian diets, even though they were not entirely vegetarian. Many of these researchers believe that animals' diets were not entirely vegetarian or vegan. While eating more meat and fat can lower cholesterol, it can also improve cardiovascular disease prevention.
